Good Times at Typhoon Lagoon

I've been wanting to visit Typhoon Lagoon for over a decade now and this past weekend I finally got a chance to go. I had a blast with a group of 12 friends from the Fernandina area. The dynamics of the wave takes some getting used to. It's a fun wave but feels a bit slower than normal and the takeoff is unique, with the wave building from one corner of the tank signalled by a large toilet flushing sound. It will never replace ocean surfing but I would definitely do it again.

Stoked for Sisters of the Sea This Weekend

Sofia at the 2015 Sisters of the Sea surf competition

My house has been full of excitement this past week in anticipation for the annual Sisters of the Sea surf competition. This will be my daughter Sofia's second time competing and she has been looking forward to it since last year. I've been surfing for around 25 years and Sofia for less than two. Her progress over the last year has been amazing, due to the excellent instruction by Surf Asylum. David and Betsy are not only great surfers but their teaching skills a second to none. They are a blessing to the Amelia Island community. I've never been a big fan of competitive surfing but David and Betsy have taught me that competitions can be fun if approached with the right attitude. If you get a chance, come down to the Jax Beach pier on Saturday and check out the all-girls action!
